How to write a poem

Many people ask me how to write a poem. If you are asking, then perhaps you will never write one. A poem is a spontaneous happening, not unlike a sneeze. It just jumps out of you, sometimes entirely unexpected. There are NO RULES, really, except be humane. One of my earliest mentors, the late Vincent Ferrini, used to say," A poet is a spy for God!" Personally, I write poetry to stay alive, not just to survive, but to thrive. I like to think that the poems I write help people to manage the highs and lows of life.
